At NASA LaRC, we have been exploring how we will work virtually to more fully enable robotic space exploration. For example, if we have a rover on another planet, how can a global research team interact with each other (from their homes, the beach, their office...) and the equipment on another planet to provide the same experience and outcome we are familiar with when a team is co-located to work on a project.

Our near term motivation for this discussion is that being able to effectively work in a VW will:

  • Enable more effective telecommuting, saving time and gas money
  • Enable more effective collaboration across geographic locations, reducing the amount of travel required
  • Enable more effective meetings locally
  • Enable visual interfaces to AI agents
  • Enhance re-training and distance learning
  • Enhance the quality of living for NASA workers
  • Enable the 21st Century Lab (21CL) concept
